Free dating apps in Canada: what 'free' actually means

Almost every dating app in Canada calls itself free. Very few of them are. Here's what usually sits behind the paywall, what to check before you sign up, and where Mekora stands.

The three things apps usually charge for

Free sign-up is not the same as free use. When a Canadian dating app asks for money, it is nearly always for one of these:

Volume. A daily cap on likes or swipes, lifted by a subscription. You can browse, but you run out of the one action that matters.
Visibility. Boosts, priority placement and "be seen first" features. Your profile exists either way; paying decides how many people ever load it.
Information. Seeing who already liked you, read receipts, or unlimited rewinds — all things the app already knows and chooses to withhold.

Questions worth asking before you sign up

Can I message someone I've connected with without paying? If not, the app is not free in any useful sense.
Is there a daily limit on likes, and what happens when I hit it?
Does the free tier hide who liked me?
Is there an auto-renewing trial? Check the cancellation path before, not after.
How do I delete my account and my data, and is that link easy to find?

Where Mekora stands

Mekora has no paid tier. There is nothing to upgrade to, no boosts to buy, and no feature that unlocks with a card. Profiles, discovery, Add Friend requests and messaging are all included for everyone. Identity verification is available and adds a badge to your profile, but it is optional — it is never a condition of using the app.
