Most online dating goes fine. The small share that doesn't tends to follow patterns you can learn to spot early — and Canada has specific services worth knowing about before you need them.

Before you meet

Keep the conversation in the app until you're comfortable. Moving to text or WhatsApp within minutes is a common pressure tactic.
Do a quick reverse image search on their photos if something feels rehearsed.
Ask for a short video call. Refusing every call while pushing hard for a relationship is the single clearest warning sign.
Never send money, gift cards or crypto — no matter the emergency, and no matter how long you've been talking.

What a verification badge does and doesn't prove

Romance scams: the shape they take

Reports to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre consistently rank romance fraud among the costliest scam types in the country. The script is remarkably consistent: fast intensity, a reason they can never meet (overseas contract, military posting, offshore rig), a crisis that needs money, and then a "sure thing" investment opportunity. If a conversation hits two of those beats, stop and tell a friend about it.

First dates

Public place, daytime if possible, somewhere you already know.
Arrange your own transport there and back.
Tell a friend the where, the when and the who, and set a check-in time.
Keep your drink with you and stop if you feel off — you owe no one an explanation.
Don't share your home address, workplace or financial details on a first meeting.

If something goes wrong

Emergency: call 911.
Fraud or a scam attempt: the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, 1-888-495-8501.
Sexual assault support: your provincial crisis line — most operate 24/7 and are free.
Mental health crisis: the 988 Suicide Crisis Helpline (call or text 988).
Intimate images shared without consent: report to your local police and to the platform hosting them.
